Pen, feather or bow?

When it comes to the quality of a double or single duvet, it is important to distinguish between feather, down and quilt or knot.

The feather is generally that of the wings and the tail, it is a rigid plumage not lending itself to padding; the quill is the featherless plumage while the down or bow represents the softest part and comes from the underside of the goose’s chest.

Its very light structure retains air and creates an insulating effect that allows animals to withstand thermal excursions and to go from hot to cold. The duvet is therefore more valuable than the feather.

It is therefore important to always read the label and look at the composition: the ideal would be 100% goose down, or at least 90% down and 10% feathers.

What other aspects should be taken into account?

better quality than a duvet

The origin of the feather is also very important. Animals that grow up and live in harsh climatic environments, such as Northern Europe, Siberia, or Canada, develop much softer and more precious underbust quilts.

With the expression virgin down, we mean the new down, never used before for any other garment. In the absence of this mention, it could be a feather already used for another duvet which is recovered, washed, sterilized and placed in a new bag. Obviously it has lost in performance and is the cheapest type.

When we talk about the heating capacity of a goose down, we refer to heat points: these are coefficients that classify duvets on a scale of 1 to 5 according to the heat transmitted, that is- that is, they range from very light for summer (1) to those that guarantee maximum warmth (5) for the coldest climates.

A blanket’s degree of warmth is also measured using the Tog scale: the higher the score, the more heat the garment can accumulate.

The Filling Power defines the filling capacity of goose down, that is to say the volume/weight ratio of the filling from which the quality of the product is deduced. The higher this value, the better the quality of the feather: in fact, the more precious the feather, the smaller the quantity needed to fill the duvet and the softer and lighter it will be.

The quality of a double or single duvet is also measured by the component of the outer fabric. The most used material is cotton, which guarantees good breathability.

It is good that the seams are checked, like those of a duvet: the feathers thus remain confined to a small surface, with an homogeneous weight, to favor an even distribution of heat.

What certifications protect the purchase?

The Nomite brand guarantees that the product is hypoallergenic and anti-mite. The Oeko-Tex mark concerns the certification of textile products that are not harmful to health.

Some duvet producers are members of the Feather and Bedding Industry Association (Edfa). In this way, they certify that the geese come from certified farms, where they are treated with the utmost care.

How best to store the duvet?

For a duvet to have a long life, it is good, when waking up, to expose it to the air without leaving it in direct sunlight, so that it can evacuate the humidity received from the body during the night.

The duvet can usually be washed in the washing machine. The most modern machines even have a dedicated wash cycle for duvets and goose or synthetic duvets.

It is also very important to dry the garment perfectly, to avoid that the feathers it contains are all concentrated in a single point.

It is recommended to place the duvet in a duvet cover. Beyond the aesthetic factor, a duvet cover best protects its soft contents, helping to ensure a long life.
